postheadericon Christmas Shopping Wrapped Up

Dust off your tinsel and bust out that Santa hat people, because……. IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN!

Now this time of year comes married with either a feeling of glee, or of dread; I have not yet met anyone ambiguous about Christmas. You either love it, like it, or absolutely hate it.
Luckily for my lovely readers, I’m in the former camp. Hooray! No Christmas Grinch blog from me today. *smiley face*

But I do really feel for those that hate Christmas, it usually goes hand in hand with hating shopping, or just being generally antisocial. To those people I would like to offer a hug, and some simple tips for pain free Christmas shopping from the comfort of your own (grumpy) home.

Here’s my pick of the best websites for pretty much everyone:

1. www.feelunique.com
This fantastic beauty website has the best prices on the high street, and delivery is included for each item. ( they ship from Jersey, cheeky cheeky!) Have a rummage in your gift receivers bathroom/dresser/make up bag to see which brands they like, or go straight to the Christmas section on the website for gift ideas to suit any budget.

2. www.cheapsmells.com
Does what it says on the tin, pretty much the fragrance version of the website above. Top brands, great prices, you can’t go wrong really. Everyone loves smellies, don’t they?
If your a bit clueless and need some ideas, I would suggest going straight to the Award Winners page to ensure you’re on the right track. And Gentlemen; you can win brownie points on Xmas day by casually commenting “Yes darling, isn’t it gorgeous? I heard it won best perfume in the Elle Magazine Beauty Awards….”

3. www.kitsch.co.uk
For your office Secret Santa or random stocking fillers, this website is perfect for those funny little gifts that amuse you for a few days then get lost in the top drawer somewhere…but it’s also good for people with special interests; think Alice in Wonderland tea sets, Gothic wine glasses, and for those golden oldies….they have an Elvis shop. Nice.

4. www.handpickedcollection.com
This really is a lovely website; I could spend hours putting things in my basket (the online equivalent of window shopping) as the products are all so original, and the categories are well thought out – ‘Gadgets for Men’, ‘Gifts for teenage boys’ and various home and garden sections. If your short on time, use their Top Ten section on the homepage to go straight to the no-brainer best sellers.

5. www.whiskhampers.co.uk
When generic gifts are required – ie teacher, next door neighbour or boss – you can’t beat this website for a fantastic range of hampers. The food and drink hampers are well presented and great quality, but they also do garden gifts and corporate hampers too…. beats sending your clients a pen for Christmas!

6. www.tree2mydoor.com
We all know someone who has everything, but do they have a lemon tree? An Olive Tree? Or even a Fig Tree? Chances are, probably not! Tree to my Door has a great selection of interesting trees for an alternative Christmas Gift, or send a Christmas Holly Bush to someone in early December to get that festive spirit underway.

I hope you’ve found these suggestions somewhat helpful, let me know of any other great gifts you find and we can re-post on the blog.

Cheerio people, till next time; I’m off to make some eggnog…

postheadericon My New Heroine

While flicking through an old issue of Elle magazine, I came across a page with the corner folded over which in my world means ‘YOU HAVEN’T READ ME YET!’ It was an article on Dolly Parton, which I remembered being non-plussed about the first time round. Do I really need to be educated about a 65 year old bouffant-topped sequin-covered country singer? But I read on, not having anything better to do.

I think the reason for my hesitation was simply, I’ve never taken her seriously. I’ve never been a fan of country music (which doesn’t help) but she has always seemed a caricature of an actual person, all big boobs, tiny waist and the aforementioned bouffant and sequins. Crucially with a great voice, but seemingly no brain.

Oh how wrong I was!

As I read further into the article, I started to develop that weird sense of pride you get when you’re proud of a fellow sister. £315 million fortune you say? Owns a Theme Park, Radio Station, Record and Production companies? Employs 3,000 people across the States? Hmm. Well, sounds to me like she’s done pretty well for herself, she may have a business brain after all!

I’m amused as I read on to find out her sometimes nickname: The Iron Butterfly. In her own words: “I’m not a mean person but I drive a hard bargain.” Brilliant! I’m sure many of us ladies like to think we follow the same mantra…

But what really got me was her attitude; her charisma and sense of self belief comes across so naturally, and you believe it when she says she has always been like that and has always known what she wanted from life. She is totally aware that her look is over-exaggerated, and she says “it’s all part of the fun!”

Part of the fun? Hooray! A woman that has fun with her look, every day of the week, and doesn’t take herself too seriously. How totally refreshing. A great quote that was lost on me the first time – “it takes alot of money to look this cheap!”

She’s also totally honest about the fact that she’s had work done, and says that she tries to do it in good taste, and if it makes you feel good then why not? God didn’t put plastic surgeons on this earth to starve!

I finished the article having found a new heroine: granted I may leave out the sequins and stick with my straightners, but I vow to attempt to be half as determined as her with the same lightness of heart.

postheadericon Pure Gossip

So today I’m going to indulge us all in some pure gossip; starting first with Lindsay Lohan looking appalling at a premiere recently. Dirty hands, stained teeth and an unusually puffy face, not exactly red carpet material…

Lindsay’s had a much publicised battle trying to stay clean and healthy, and sadly from these images I suspect she is not out of the woods just yet. Get well soon Lindsay!

See if you can recognise her here:

http://www.radaronline.com/photos/image/149272/2011/10/linday-lohan-looks-a-mess-red-carpet#image-load

Secondly you should all be aware of the Fashion Season drawing to a close (New York, London, Paris and Milan darling!) and I was very interested to see the press’s reaction to a certain Mr Kanye West’s debut at Paris Fashion Week. I think you all know what’s coming next… Unfortunately for Kanye, it was not good. It was not good at all. Some would say terrible. Oh dear.

We’ve already seen pop stars Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham launch fashion collections, (with only the latter coming anywhere close to the standard viewed at the Paris shows) so I personally think your setting yourself up launching – of all places – in Paris. His debut on the first of October was the day before Givenchy and a day after Dior. High expectations? Um, yes! So I don’t think many people are surprised he’s been slated. And I haven’t even got to the clothes yet!

Now I’m no expert, but you wouldn’t see me sauntering down the high street in any of these looks next season, for a few reasons, mainly: a) I like to wear a bra, b) I’m not overly keen on fur in the summer (a little sweaty, no?) and c) I prefer my evening dresses to look less like they’ve been slashed with a machete, and more like an actual dress.

Here’s a taste of a few of the more ‘interesting’ looks, gelled beautifully with quotes from reviewers (courtesy of www.buzzfeed.com )

If you would like a little more amusement, see 7 looks with quotes here http://www.buzzfeed.com/provincialelitist/7-vicious-reviews-of-kanye-wests-paris-fashio or for the really nosey, see the whole collection in all it’s glory here http://www.style.com/fashionshows/complete/S2012RTW-KWEST

postheadericon Adults Only Beauty

As everybody knows I’m all for a little bit of nipping or tucking, filling or plumping; I think if it’s for maintenance purposes & it makes you feel good, go for it! Obviously there are times when peoples vision becomes distorted & they loose touch with their own face (I’m sure you’ve all seen the Catwoman before) but I truly think – it’s a free world, not everyone is keen on it, but the technology is there if you wish to use it from the age that you feel is appropriate.

Cue my unbridled horror at the news of a ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ Mum (it’s a TV program that documents child Beauty Pagents) who claims to have given her 8 year old Botox injections. What?? My mouth actually physically dropped open.

I’m pretty confident that 99% of the worlds population share my horror at this story. Botox belongs in an adults world, as do tooth bleaching, waxing, and the various other treatments these women subject their children to. A childs beauty is in their innocence, and I suspect this particular mother has not put a thought towards how exposure to these grown up experiences will impact her  daughters development & path toward womanhood. Shame.

Now, back to something more lighthearted: it’s also been reported this week that some pundits believe that Vladimir Putin has had some work done.

I love this guy! Have you seen him cavorting shirtless on a horse? Dressed up (in all seriousness) as Russian Rambo? Riding a Harley?  Here is a man who is acutely aware of his appearance and is doing his utmost to keep up appearances (and stay macho) as he ages.

He hasn’t personally responded to these claims (and his spokesman said he was ‘not aware’ of any proceedures being done) but I say, fair play to him! If he likes it, then I like it.

Judge for yourself: do you think he’s had something done? Does he look better or worse? Let’s have verdicts people!

postheadericon Everlasting Botox – is it possible?

Well we’ve all been a bit giddy in the Ethos office this week… why? It’s LAUNCH WEEK!

postheadericon My top 5 products Right Now

If you’re looking for a new beauty investment or just a pick-up-on-your-lunch-break product, here are my top 5 right now:

Ysl touché éclat – I first bought this many moons ago after hearing countless beauty pages tell me how fab it was, but I have to admit I never understood what all the fuss was about. It’s only now, as I sink slowly into my 30′s and watch my skin sink slowly into my eye sockets, that I understand the hype. If you’re also gathering dark circles under your bottom lashes, Ive got a top tip for you: visit a YSL counter, fein innocence & get the experts to show you how it’s done.
Jessica Phenomen Oil – Jessica are well known for good quality nail products, and this doesn’t disappoint: sold as a nourishing intensive moisturiser, it has a handy dropper for dispensing a drop or two per nail, making sure there’s no wastage & it’s easy to use. A must for DIY mani’s & pedi’s, I keep a bottle on my desk at work for when my nails are looking a little dry. You can grab yours here.
Clinique Turnaround Concentrate – I stumbled across this little beauty in one of my frequent “gift with purchase” splurges, and even in the tiny trial size it was impressive – apply sparingly to your skin & you’ll be amazed at how your skin turns instantly soft. There are other benefits too, such as evening of skin tone & faster healing of blemishes, but my main reason for devotion is how quickly the texture of my skin changes. If you need more convincing, read other reviews here.
Revlon Skin Matching Make Up – Have you ever bought a foundation after the obligatory ‘test-on-the-back-of-your-hand’, only to get home and find it lies dormant in your top drawer as it’s not quite the right colour? Those days are over with this wonder product! I dont quite know how it works, but to be honest I don’t need to: all I know is I can apply it quickly to my face with fingertips, and within seconds it has blended into my exact skin tone. It has surprisingly good staying power (only a powder or 2 daily to keep the shine away) and is a BARGAIN for under a tenner. Get it at your nearest Revlon stockist.
Tresemme Dry Shampoo – You’ve probably by now heard of Dry Shampoo, and if you haven’t, where have you been??A quick fix for inbetween washes, you spray it onto your roots, give it a minute then rub in with your fingertips …. And hey presto! Any oily residue accquired overnight will have disappeared. I find this an absolute lifesaver on running-late mornings, I’ve also roadtested every brand going and tresemme’s version is by far the best. If like me you have fine hair, you’ll see it also has those mysterious root-lifting powers we’re always searching for … and If you have thick hair; I am very, very jealous.

postheadericon Lagging Workout Tips

As we stutter along towards the end of the summer, it’s all too easy to let routine fall by the wayside and fall out of sync with your workouts. We’re too busy booking last minute trips to the sun, considering our new season purchases, and mulling over just how early is too early to unpack your opaques and cashmere.

But you must keep up your motivation!

If like the PM you have a personal trainer to drag you around Hyde Park every morning, good for you! Keep up the good work!! *slaps you hard twice on the back* If like me you’re stuck with yourself as your motivator, here are a few tips to spruce up your lagging workout.

1. Glam it up like Gwen & don some mirrored aviators when running. Best worn under a hat, you’ll feel like a mean machine & they scream “get out of the way & don’t talk to me!!!”

2. Try The Tracey Anderson Method. Everyone raves about it, and anyone THAT toned gets my vote. (although I’m not sure about the mismatched bikini/underwear look)

3. Mix it up; put yourself out there and plan a fortnight of trying some new sporting activities. There are so many interesting things to do out there now – get out and try one!! Most will have the option of a taster class if you just want to dip your toes in… go for fun things salsa dancing, Zumba, and miltary/park based fitness. (ok, some may be not so fun, but you’ll get firm buns I promise)

4. Try rowing – 1,000 calories an hour?using 84% of my muscles? Yes  please!

5. Buy yourself a bike and hit the streets. You wouldn’t catch me on one, but everyone else is doing it so it’s got to be good right? Londonites can make like Boris and try the hire scheme, that way you can test if you want one with or without basket. If you decide to give it a go, please try hard to wear your helmet stylishly. I have not yet seen anyone that can pull it off. And if you can, please email me with photos. I need evidence.

And finally, join the 6am alarm click crew. If your not already an earlybird, haul yourself out of bed this week and I promise you’ll feel the benefits. I often do a morning run across Richmond Bridge, and there’s no denying it’s liberating to have London to myself for half an hour! AND there’s no need to wear those aviators either. You’ll also feel sufficiently smug knowing you’ve burnt 500 calories before most people have a chance to burn their toast.

postheadericon Tidy up those Talons!

If I was in charge, I’d make a rule that during the summer months any woman that wanted to wear open toed shoes MUST have a pedicure. This may be controversial, but I can’t stand seeing female toes with no polish on them. It makes my skin crawl. I really have a very strong aversion to it. Its like driving past a car crash; I know I’m looking at something horrible, but I just can’t stop staring. Call me shallow, call me feetist, call me whatever you want.*

What prompted this mini rant, was the unwanted appearance of said toes opposite me on the tube yesterday. Well dressed and manicured woman, why? Why didn’t you paint your toes last night?? Sigh.
My reaction reminded me of last year’s BAFTA’s, when while trawling the Who Wore What pages, I had the unfortunate occurrence to come across picture after picture of Kristen Stewart’s unpedicured feet on the red carpet. Shudder. See it them in all their glory here if you dare -

http://en.terra.com/celebrity-gossip/pictures/kristen_stewart_needs_a_pedicure/38141

It really only takes a few minutes to put your feet’s proverbial ‘face on’, so don’t be lazy girls, get painting. Here’s my pick of the best colours around right now-

    Chanel – orange fizz
Buy it here: http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ChanelProduct_10001_10001_59452_398134_-1?jspStoreDir=Debenhams&ddkey=DebExternalProductDisplay
Jessica Pinks – try the raspberry, Juicy or Flirty shades
Buy it here: www.feelunique.com/p/Jessica-Nail-Colour
Jessica Electric Teal
Buy it here: www.feelunique.com/p/Jessica-Nail-Colur-Ignite-Collection
And free with this months Elle magazine, this gorgeous pale grey colour. Wear with white now, rock with black later.
